This John Mayer Rock preset is inspired by some of John’s songs that feature more overdriven guitar tones. The FX available on the preset allow you to transform from his iconic sweet clean tones of sought after boutique amps, to singing lead tones from stacked overdrives! This means that many of his sounds from all across his career are achievable in this one preset – past and present!
There are 4 snapshots that use just some of the tonal options in this preset. They take you through each level of gain, even to some extremes for John, that have been a reflection of his more recent tones. Alternatively, you can individually bypass the FX in stomp mode, to mix and match freely! There are a couple of slightly different overdrives to choose from, so this is worth considering...
The preset was put together using a 2013 Fender Deluxe Lonestar Stratocaster, and tested on studio monitors and headphones. It was designed for use with the Helix Floor/LT as it uses a fair amount of DSP and both signal paths in the unit. It was made on firmware version 3.11 but should have no problems with later versions (it works fine on 3.15).
Clean – A perfect starting point, to put you in the majority of John’s tonal territory!
Drive – Makes use of the classic tube screamer/mod boost type overdrive, which John has been known to favour. This is also the snapshot the preset starts on.
Solo – A similar sound to the above, with a very slight increase in gain and a volume boost.
LTH – standing for ‘Last Train Home’, this snapshot is aimed at giving you something close to John’s recent beloved lead tone on the record of the same name. Steeped in nostalgia!
This preset is best used when connected to a PA console, audio interface or FRFR speaker as it has cab sim (IR) enabled. If you intend to use it with an amp and cabinet please disable the amp/cab block.
